What Is a Photocard in K-Pop? A Beginner's Guide to POCA Culture
Photocards explained: why K-pop fans collect them, how random inclusion works, what POB means, and how to trade safely as an international fan.
The Short Answer
A photocard (also called a poca or PC) is a small collectible photo — usually about 2×3 inches — randomly included inside K-pop albums. Fans collect and trade them hoping to complete sets of their favorite member, making photocards one of the biggest collecting subcultures in K-pop fandom.
Why Photocards Matter in K-Pop Fandom
Photocards turned album-buying into a collecting hobby. Because cards are inserted randomly, you never know which member you’ll pull — so fans buy multiple copies, trade duplicates, and hunt rare versions. Think of it like trading cards, but the “rare pull” is your bias.
A few reasons the culture runs so deep:
- The bias system. Most fans have a favorite member (their bias), and pulling your bias’s card feels like winning a small lottery.
- Scarcity by design. Different album versions, retailer exclusives, and limited rounds mean some cards exist in far smaller quantities than others.
- Community. Trading is a social activity — photocard trading threads and meetups are how many fans make fandom friends.
POB, Lucky Draw, and Other Terms You’ll See
- POB (Pre-Order Benefit): an exclusive photocard you only get by pre-ordering from a specific retailer. The same album can have different POBs per store.
- Lucky draw: a paid random-draw event at select stores where each purchase gives one chance at a small pool of exclusive cards.
- Dupes: duplicate cards fans list for trade.
How International Fans Trade Photocards Safely
- Trade through platforms with buyer protection rather than direct bank transfers.
- Check proofs. Legitimate traders share timestamped photos of the actual card.
- Know market prices before buying — rare cards of popular members can be dramatically marked up, and “too cheap” is a red flag for scams or fakes.
- Use toploaders and sleeves when shipping; condition drastically affects value.
